Retention dependencies

Efficient method development and some times successful troubleshooting of certain problems in HPLC mainly depend on the understanding of the retention mechanism and the way how different parameters influence the separation.

In our discussion of the retention dependencies in reversed-phase HPLC we will be using the surface interaction approach. This has been discussed in the "Theory" and "Adsorbents" chapters.

We have to emphasize that all types of component behavior in the column are related to:
type and strength of its interaction with the adsorbent surface
type and strength of the interaction of the eluent molecules with the surface
adsorbent surface chemistry.

Note, that analyte - eluent interactions in the bulk solution donot have any influence on the retention
